A DC SQUID RF amplifier used in a low field MRI system

We describe recent changes made to a 0.01 T small scale MRI system in order to realise image SNR improvements when using a low T-c dc SQUID based preamplifier at 4.2 K. The SQUID is connected to an input circuit, tuned to 425 kHz, which has an undamped Q-factor of 17,000. The SQUID's flux bias point is maintained with a Direct Offset Integration Technique (DOIT) flux locked loop and this is combined with a secondary feedback network to damp the coil resonance and provide an imaging bandwidth of up to 5 kHz.
