The photopatterning and photoinduced structural changes of liquid crystalline gels materials consisting of discotic columnar liquid crystals such as 2,3,6,7,10,11-hyxahexyloxy-triphenylene (1) and photoresponsive hydrogen bonded gelator (2) were studied. The discotic liquid crystal (1) was synthesized by etherification of 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene and 1-bromohexane. The synthesized compound was found to exhibit a hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline (Col) phase between 69 and 100°C on heating. It was also found that the photopatterned structures of the nematic and chiral nematic gels are fixed by the aggregates of gelators.
