An innovative approach for microdosimetry analysis in boron neutron capture therapy

Due to the short-range of the charged particles emitted in BNCT, the biological effects are strongly affected by the microscopic heterogeneity of the absorbed dose distribution. Three-dimensional (3D) dosimetry information at the cellular level is required for this study. An ideal approach would be 3D reconstruction of the cell and B-10 microdistribution obtained from sequential tissue autoradiography sections. This is however impractical. An approach presented here allows estimation of the microscopic dose distribution without 3D reconstruction by using individual 2D tissue sections with a 2D to 3D correction. As an example, a data set from our laboratory is analyzed. The result was verified by a Monte Carlo simulation.
