Chromium phonon drag: The effect of 4.6% vanadium

The thermoelectric powers of a polycrystalline Cr sample for two anneals and a Cr-4.6% V alloy have been measured for temperatures between 10 K and 320 K. In this temperature range, the Cr samples are antiferromagnetic while the alloy is paramagnetic. The data were converted to absolute values by calibrating the coiled copper leads against 6-9's Pb and using Roberts' data for the absolute thermoelectric power of lead. The data for Cr and its alloy show maxima between about 30 K and 50 K that are taken to indicate phonon drag. The qualitative correlation of the data for these samples indicates that the phonon drag component is not dependent on the magnetic character of the samples.
