Polycrystalline SrBi2Ta2O9 film has been grown on fused silica by pulsed laser deposition at 700 degrees C. The wavelength dependence of the transmittance of the film was determined. We first obtained the band gap E-g = 4.0 eV. Favourable optical waveguiding properties have been demonstrated by observation of sharp m lines from the TE and TM multimodes. The surface and cross sectional morphology of the film was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
