摘要：

This paper provides general descriptions on transliteration of foreign words in the Burmese language. Phenomena of phonetic and orthographic issues are discussed. A notation scheme to eliminate the inherent vowel and to address the dependent vowels is designed, which can be generally used to describe transliteration issues in an abugida writing system. Based on this work, we expect that prescriptive guidelines can be gradually established to normalize the transliteration of modern foreign words in Burmese.
