Green Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles Using Pithecellobium dulce Leaf Extract and Its Biological Activities

Pithecellobium dulce leaf extract was used to synthesize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the first time. This bio-synthesized novel material was investigated by UV-visible spectra, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive analysis by X-ray. Excellent antibacterial activity was revealed against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Significant antifungal activities by the AuNPs were also demonstrated. The analysis of AuNPs by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay proved 100 % toxic effect and the minimum value of half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) indicates that it is safe to be used as drug in the medical field.
