The authors investigated the selective properties of polymer film membrane electrodes with thiocyanate function based on ten ion exchangers which differ in the nature of the radicals in the quaternary ammonium base and also in the nature of the ″onium″ base itself. They find that all the ion-exchange materials investigated (except for cetyltrimethylammonium thiocyanate), namely various representatives of symmetric and asymmetric ammonium bases, a phosphonium base, and a metallic derivative of phenanthroline, are suitable for obtaining highly specific membrane electrodes for the thiocyanate ion. These film electrodes are recommended for extensive use in determining the activity (or concentration) of thiocyanate ions in solutions with complex compositions.
