The usual additives to a 4600 and other alloy steel powders are graphite and a lubricant for making the preform. The lubricant has been changed from metallic stearates to a stearamide type. The metallic stearates usually leave an oxide in the structure which would be detrimental to the properties of a fully dense structure. The stearamide type has an ash content of only 0. 05% maximum. However, the ash contents of natural graphites can vary a great deal depending upon their origin. This paper deals with the hot forging of a 4640 composition where a natural graphite is compared to a synthetic graphite.
