The usefulness of hot torsion tests to study strength, ductility and fracture during hot working is illustrated over temperatures ranging from 800 degree C to 1200 degree C amd strain rates ranging from 7. 56 multiplied by 10** minus **3/sec to 3. 93/sec using an austenitic steel. The determination of activation energy for hot working and representation of stress-strain rate data allowing extrapolation to higher temperatures and strain rates are illustrated. The mechanisms of crack nucleation and propagation during hot working are investigated metallographically and by using a scanning electron microscope.
