The application of multicriterion optimization to a gas chromatographic problem was effected by summarizing objectives analysis time and column performance to a substitute objective. The experiments were carried out and evaluated according to a 3**2 factorial design. A second degree polynomial was taken as a base for the description of the dependence between the substitute objective and the experimental variables carrier gas flow rate and heating rate of temperature program. Shortening of analysis time by 29% at a worsen column performance of only 17% could be reached at an application example.
