Results are presented of a survey to determine the status of instrumentation and automation systems in the U. S. coal preparation plants, and a rationale is suggested to determine the cost effectiveness of applying control systems. Twelve coal preparation plants and each plant's manager were surveyed, and four major coal preparation plant designers were questioned. Details are provided on unit process controls, and the use of computers in process plant optimization is described.
