When a machine designer develops a concept for a new machine, he frequently expresses the control requirements as a sequence of units. A program is developed that allows such sequence of events to be converted directly into a working program. This approach called Direct Sequential Programming (DSP) encompasses a series of steps, with each step representing the state of the machine for a period of time. The use of a clear, concise programming language such as DSP that provides integrated motion control and numeric processing capabilities can dramatically reduce programming time.
