DECLINE OF CORROSION RESISTANCE BY Cr-DEPLETION LAYER IN SUS 304 STAINLESS STEEL.

When stainless steels are annealed in a gas burning furnace to form a surface oxide scale enriched in Cr, a Cr depletion zone is generated due to the delay of Cr diffusion from the matrix to the surface. Therefore, insufficient pickling causes lower corrosion resistance. After pickling, a depth-profile of Cr and corrosion resistance against Cl** minus ion were measured. Surface Cr concentration and corrosion resistance increased with increasing pickling time. It is concluded that a pickling time of 35-45 sec is suitable.
