Heat storage in water contained in tanks, pits and rock caverns is a technique that today is applied at several pilot and demonstration projects in Sweden. The method is in itself straightforward and simple; heat is stored in water in a sufficiently large volume, and is recovered when needed. It can be used both for short time and seasonal storage and thermal output is directly proportional to temperature pumping rate which makes the system versatile to heat demand. Its drawbacks lie mainly in high investment costs especially when applied for seasonal storage.
