A semiconductor detection unit for x radiation is described, with a correlated charge-sensitive preamplifier that enables the signal-to-noise ratio to be increased by a factor of ROOT 2 compared to the normal scheme. A method of measuring detector and resistor noise with the aid of the preamplifier is also described. An energy resolution of 196 ev for the K// alpha Fe line can be achieved with a detector having a sensitive region 5 mm in diameter by 2. 5 mm deep, with an energy equivalent of 167 ev.
