Investigations were carried out on single-, two- and three-pass joints made by automatic submerged-arc welding with Sv-08Kh20N9G7T and Sv-10G36M206 wires 5mm in diameter into a V-shaped groove 30 mm deep with an opening angle of 50 degree in type 30KhN3MF steel. The welded joints were made in steps in order to facilitate evaluation of the effect of each subsequent pass on the structure and properties of the metal of the previous bead. Depending on the chemical composition of the welding wire, multi-pass welding was characterized by the precipitation of embrittling phases in the weld metal which slightly change the mechanical properties of the welded joints.
