The new 8-lane Zilwaukee Bridge on 1-75 between Saginaw and Bay City, Mich. , replaces an aging, 4-lane drawbridge that was a hazard to both navigation and freeway traffic. The new post-tensioned, segmental, precast concrete box girder structure, actually two bridges each 1. 5 mile (2. 4 km) long and 125 ft. (38 m) high, was constructed using the balanced cantilever method.
