6,7a-Di-tert-butyl-8-iodooctahydro-2,5-methano-1 H-indene, C18H31I, M(r) = 374.35, monoclinic, P2(1), a = 9.095 (1), b = 7.087 (1), c = 14.149 (2) angstrom, beta = 107.87 (3)-degrees, V = 867.9 (2) angstrom 3, Z = 2, D(x) = 1.432 g cm-3, lambda(Mo K-alpha) = 0.71073 angstrom, mu = 18.1 cm-1, F(000) = 384, T = 293 K, R = 0.025 for 1673 observed reflections [F0 greater-than-or-equal-to 4-sigma(F0)]. The protoadamantane cage has a five-membered ring in the envelope conformation, one six-membered ring (with the I substituent) in a distorted chair conformation and the other six-membered ring (with two tert-butyl groups) in a boat conformation. The I atom is in an axial position. Molecules are joined by van der Waals contacts.
