Phenyltris((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)methane (CF3SO2)3CC6H5, and its isomeric ester (CF3SO2)2C=SCF3(O)OC6H5 are formed by the thermal decomposition of benzenediazonium tris((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)methanide, C6H5N2+SO2(CF2)3SO2N-, which was prepared by treatment of tris((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)methane, (CF3SO2)3CH, with benzenediazonium chloride. Similarly, pyrolysis of benzenediazonium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)amide, C6H5N2+(CF3SO2)2N-, and the cyclic analog C6H5N2+SO2(CF2)3SO2N-, prepared analogously from the corresponding sulfonimides, yields the N-phenyl and O-phenyl isomers (CF3SO2)2NC6H5, CF3SO2N=SCF3(O)OC6H5, SO2(CF2)3SO2NC6H5, and SO2(CF2)3S(O)(=N)OC6H5, respectively.
