STRUCTURED DEVELOPMENT - A STRUCTURATIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN EXECUTIVE INFORMATION-SYSTEM

Giddens' structuration theory has attracted growing interest in the Information Systems field in recent years. Orlikowski and Robey (1991) used it to develop a research agenda based on a framework for investigating the interaction of human actors and social structures during Information Systems development and use. This paper describes the application of the Orlikowski and Robey framework to the analysis of a case study of the Executive Information Systems development process in a large manufacturing company. The analysis is then used to identify a number of important practical, theoretical and epistemological issues in the application of structuration theory in Information Systems research.
