Ultrasonography has been used by surgeons in the evaluation of trauma patients for more than two decades in Europe and Asia. Ultrasonography is easy to use, cost effective, noninvasive, portable, rapid, and repeatable. Because the results are available so quickly, they may be used by the surgeon to prioritize resources for resuscitation and evaluation. In the diagnosis of hemoperitoneum in patients with blunt abdominal trauma, ultrasonography has sensitivity and specificity similar to diagnostic peritoneal lavage.
