DEVELOPMENT TRENDS FOR ISDN CUSTOMER PREMISES EQUIPMENT

This paper discusses development trends for ISDN customer premises equipment (CPE). Since the inauguration of commercial ISDN services in Japan in April 1988, they have steadily penetrated the market and the development of ISDN CPE has proceeded at the same pace. Positioned as a high-speed digital public network, ISDN is mainly seen at this point as being a replacement for conventional data communications links. It is expected, however, that ISDN will develop in a well-balanced fashion into a comprehensive services network and lead to the creation of new markets for communications services. The development of ISDN CPE is discussed here in specific reference to information I/O media and concrete examples are given to illustrate the mainstream trends.
