Adhesion performance between aramid fibres and polyester resin may be evaluated by various techniques. In this work the most applicable, reliable and reproducible techniques were X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for detecting changes in the surface composition of the fibres as a result of chemical washing. Contact angle measurements of liquid drops on single fibres by the drop profile method indicated a decrease in the polarity of the surface after washing. The interfacial shear strength and maximum shear strength of aramid/polyester composites showed no significant differences between the as-supplied and washed fibres.
