Confining bodily difference: disability as value

Originally coined to address the physical impairments and the functional limitation of maimed war veterans, the word disability has been resignified by activists from the Disability Rights Movement who use it as a broad category of social disenfranchisement and political struggle. As Kelly Fritsch puts it disability has become a "uniformly oppressed identity category or embodiment" that renders other forms of vulnerability abject.
