Oral paracoccidioidomycosis: A case report

Paracoccidioidomycosis is an endemic fungal infection in regions of Latin America such as Brazil. It is related to professional activities where there is the management of the soil contaminated by the fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. This article aims to report a case of Paracoccidioidomycosis with oral mucosa manifestations, addressing relevant aspects of its etiopathogenesis, clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment. A 42-year-old male, farmer, presented macrocheilia and moriform ulcers located mainly in the lower labial mucosa bilaterally and in the left buccal mucosa. With the main clinical diagnostic hypothesis of Paracoccidioidomycosis, incisional biopsy was performed. Pathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis and the patient was referred for medical treatment, successfully performed by oral itraconazole. The dentist should know the characteristics of the oral lesions of Paracoccidioidomycosis, since it plays an important role in the early diagnosis of the disease.
