EVOLUTION OF THE HEAT-TRANSFER DURING THE RADIAL SOLIDIFICATION OF PURE ALUMINUM

This paper presents the determination of a heat transfer coefficient at the mould/metal interface during solidification of pure aluminium cast in a steel cylinder and the study of its variation in time during solidification and cooling of aluminium. The procedure used consists in reconstituting the temperature fields in the aluminium and the steel from a small number of temperature recordings with respect to time, done in the two environments. The reconstitutions are done by solving the reverse problem of heat conduction in each environment. In each of these environments, it was thus possible to calculate the surface temperature and the normal heat flux. The transfer coefficient is finally calculated as the ratio of the heat flux density and the temperature difference between the two walls.
