RETENTION OF ROSIN SIZES IN PAPERMAKING SYSTEMS

The degree of retention of rosin in fiber mats formed under simulated papermaking conditions was determined by use of radioactive sizing agents. Both a highly neutralized rosin paste size and an essentially unsaponified rosin particle suspension size were studied. Various chemical and physical parameters were compared for their effects on the retention of these two types of rosin sizing agents in alum-containing systems. An identical multipath mechanism of retention accounts for the results observed for both agents. The better understanding obtained by this study should help papermakers to deal more effectively with rosin sizing problems in commercial mills.
