RUSSIA NEW ENTREPRENEURS AND ENTERPRISE DIRECTORS

The functional diversification of the Russia economy can be studied by following the reforms and changes introduced by the leadership since Gorbachev's time. The present article recapitulates these changes, and then approaches the question from another angle. Starting from field studies carried out partly with new entrepreneurs and partly with directors of industrial enterprises, the author shows how the first group drift off into attitudes where any ethical consideration, or dedication to the ''vocation'' of entrepreneur, is lost sight of, while the second group, contrary to an accepted view, tend less to see things as a matter of opposing ''state'' or ''private'' constraints, and are inclined to view themselves as socially-motivated operators, endeavouring to structure the development of their enterprises, and to encourage awareness of the overriding interests of society and the country.
