Severe open ankle fracture in pediatric age. Case report.

Severe open fractures with great compromise of soft and bone tissue are rare in pediatric age. The aim of this article is to present a case that generated therapeutic doubts in the Pediatric Orthopedics and Traumatology Service at the Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell, Montevideo, Uruguay, because it's a rare injury in which there is no experience. It is about an 8 year old boy that suffered a Gustilo IIIB open ankle fracture with loss of lateral malleolus substance, associated to severe compromise of soft tissue of posterior leg lodge in its distal third, product of a traffic accident when introducing his foot in a motorcycle rear wheel. Treatment performed at the service, based on a literature review, and evolution of 41 months will be described.
