Pr-substitution effect on superconductivity is investigated for the samples of Gd1-xRxBa2Cu3O7-z (R=Pr Nd) through the measurements of lattice parameter, susceptibility, electric resistivity and ESR. With increasing R, lattice parameter c increases for R=Nd but decreases for R=Pr although these ion radius follows GB(3+)<Nd3+<Pr3+, suggesting presence of Pi(4+) ions. The lattice prameter ratio c/a varies considerably for R=Pr but not for R=Nd, implying anisotropic change of lattice parameter in the Pr-substituted samples. These results indicate the presence of both Pr3+ and Pr4+ ions, and also hybridization between Pr(3+)4f and O2p sigma orbitals which leads to covalent bonding along c axis.
