MEDIA AND DEVELOPMENT MODEL: FROM MODERNIZATION TO GOOD GOVERMENT

This paper describes and analyzes, from a historical perspective, the role that one of the central institutions of modernity, the media, has played in the development models and policies promoted by the actors of the international aid system since the 1950s. In addition, it presents and discusses the critiques to these models and policies made by intellectuals, governments, and civil society organizations from Southern countries, which have led to questioning the role of media in development processes and to redefining their inclusion in the development policies from the 1970s. Finally, the paper contributes some elements to reflect on the relationship between media, good government and development under the framework of the current governance reform strategies.
