OXYGEN NONSTOICHIOMETRY IN THE (TL, PB)-SR-CA-CU-O 1212 SYSTEM

Materials in the (Tl, Pb)Sr2CaCu2O7-delta system have been synthesised with different oxygen stoichiometries and their structure and superconducting properties studied. Powder neutron-diffraction studies reveal that for delta > 0 vacancies exist in the thallium-oxygen layer leading to an increase in the c lattice parameter, apical copper-oxygen bond and the inter-cuprate layer distance. These structural changes are discussed in relation to the superconducting properties and comparisons drawn to the double-thallium layer materials.
