摘要
Narrow-web printing and converting is that segment of the printing industry using presses with web widths of less than 609 mm. This equipment commonly includes in-line converting functions along with printing. Rapid growth and technological developments characterize this industry. Kershner reviews the types of printing equipment in the narrow-web segment and the markets the industry serves. Significant factors in the growth of narrow-web printing include the increased use of plastic materials for packaging and other uses. Also, the advantages of pressure-sensitive materials for labeling onto plastic are influential. About US$1.5 billion worth of pressure-sensitive labels are used per year in the United States; this market has both required and benefited from advances in printing technology. Kershner reviews major developments in printing plates, inks, and press capabilities. The narrow-web printing industry will branch into new markets in this decade, the author predicts. This growth will fuel further improvements and capabilities in the traditional markets for narrow webs.
