摘要
The conditions are analyzed under which planar solid, liquid or gaseous thin films in contact with bulk phases are in stable or metastable thermodynamic equilibrium and it is shown that the metastable thin films are subject to thickness transitions, i.e. abrupt changes of thickness. A general formula for the thermodynamic driving force Δmicro for a given thickness transition is derived in terms of the thin film excess chemical potential and specific surface free energy. This formula is used for determination of Δmicro in particular cases of thin solid and liquid films in normal or lateral contact with a bulk phase containing film molecules. © 1990.
