IMAGE OF A STRAIGHT EDGE IN FIBEROPTIC CONFOCAL SCANNING MICROSCOPY

Images of a straight edge in the fibre-optical confocal scanning microscope (FOCSM) are investigated. The effects of the fibre spot size and of using an annular pupil are considered. As expected, because of the fact that the FOCSM always behaves as a purely coherent imaging system, the image intensity at the edge is always equal to one quarter of its value far from the edge even for finite values of fibre spot size. Using optical fibres in the FOCSM can result in a sharper image of the straight edge than that by using a point detector.
