A review of the major issues in UK upland catchment water quality research is presented. For each issue, an attempt is made to identify why it is perceived as a problem and to examine its extent and historical trends. Causal mechanisms are discussed and possible control methods investigated. Issues examined include acidification, mobilization of toxic metals, discoloration, nutrient loss and sedimentation. © 1991.
