Analysis of elderly people care system and their health needs in the Lower Silesia region

Background. Population in Poland is ageing and it increases the need for medical services. Material and methods. Statistical data concerning years 2001 2008 were analyzed to identify problems in fulfilling medical needs of older people. Results. The number of patients above 65 years old treated in the Lower Silesia region in the analyzed time increased, but the number of medical staff, medical and care institutions changed in various ways. Conclusions. In the context of the increasing need for medical services in ageing Lower Silesia population, it is alarming to observe the unsatisfactory dynamics of development of medical institutions and personnel needed, especially the low increase in the share of medical services fulfilled by family doctors' offices.
