MANAGEMENT OF THE USE AND EXPLOITATION OF BEACHES

Voluntary adoption of quality and environmental management systems in regard to tourist beaches implies a substantial change in the way some local councils address the regulation of uses and the exploitation of these coastal zones. After analyzing weaknesses observed in current management of beaches, different standards and management systems, which are applicable, are considered. This new approach is essential to preserve the long- term economic and social benefits, which provides tourism on the seashore. An analysis of evolution regarding management certificates in the beaches of the Valencian Region allows testing the applicability of these systems and their compatibility. Sound management of beach uses, supported by these new tools, should satisfy all interested parties: tourists, local population, environment and future generations.
