摘要：
This article aims to discuss the position of Machado de Assis' Memorias Postumas de Bras Cubas, regarding Brazilian Nineteenth Century novel. It aims to underline the ruptures and continuities between Machado de Assis' novel and previous fiction prose. The idea is to map a fragment of a possible internal tradition in Brazilian novel. In order to do this, I will analyze A Carteira de Meu Tio (1855), written by Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, in order to establish some connections to Memorias Postumas de Bros Cubas.
