Motivating patients to quit smoking is one of the greatest challenges in medicine. The adverse effects of smoking on a patient's general health and the enormous cost of the habit to society should make smoking cessation a priority for physician intervention. In this article, Dr Wong discusses the addictive properties of nicotine and the consequences of giving it up and outlines a simple four-step approach to behavior modification.
