STATISTICAL-ANALYSIS OF ITEE EXAM QUESTIONS

A large scale nation wide examination system, The ITEE (lnformation-Technology Engineers' Examination) system has been conducted by the Japanese government since 1969. The number of applicants approached 500,000 in 1993. It is necessary to analyze the context of the exam questions to ascertain whether they meet the current needs of the IT community. A study on the statistical characteristics of examination questions vs pass/failure decision was made for the entry level 'Type II' examination. Two groups of examination problems behaved differently in the light of statistical analyses. Mandatory questions tend to have a high correlation. However, selective questions behave differently, depending on the choice combination. Some modification of the examination curriculum is needed to keep the system up-to-date and to meet the requirements of Japanese DP community.
