FROM PECULIAR FLOW PROPERTIES TO REINFORCEMENT IN CARBON-BLACK FILLED RUBBER COMPOUNDS

The paper demonstrates that the peculiar flow properties of carbon black filled rubber compounds and the reinforcement in vulcanisates have a common origin: strong physico-chemical interactions that take place between the elastomer chains and the carbon black aggregates during the material preparation which lead to a soft tri-dimensional network of rubber-filled aggregates with connective filaments. Special test procedures are described for the Monsanto RPA 2000 in order to probe the uncured rubber-filler morphology. Results are interpreted with respect to the model morphology.
