Soft tissue defects of the lower extremity may result from a multitude of causes. Trauma, infection, tumor resection, or native disease can result in significant soft tissue injury requiring complex coverage. A close interaction between the reconstructive orthopedist and plastic surgeon is required for proper planning of bone management, wound debridement, and coverage. A variety of methods of soft tissue coverage is available for lower extremity coverage; optimal management involves a thoughtful approach to each individual patient.
