摘要
Atrophic rhinitis is a multifactorial disease complex caused by toxigenic Bordetella bronchiseptica and Pasteurella multocida type D infections. These infections are exacerbated by poor environmental conditions (such as crowding or high levels of ammonia in the air) or concurrent infections. Turbinate atrophy is observed by transverse section of the snout at the first-second premolar teeth and at the canine tooth. Changes in operating procedures that help control atrophic rhinitis include immunization, antibiotic treatment, environmental optimization, and changes in pig flow. Piglet immunity is essential to prevent infection or turbinate damage caused by toxigenic B. bronchiseptica and P. multocida. Antibiotics have been used extensively to control the effects of atrophic rhinitis in swine but with frequently disappointing results. Economic benefits, even aside from those gained from control of atrophic rhinitis, may be greatly increased by control or improvement of concurrent disease or production problems in the herd.
