CONTACT STABILIZATION - AN ECONOMIC-ALTERNATIVE FOR WATER-POLLUTION ABATEMENT IN DEVELOPING-COUNTRIES

Water pollution abatement combined with economical solutions for wastewater treatment plants design and operation have been a crucial problem, especially for economically developing countries. This study attempts to evaluate the capabilities of the contact stabilization process, which is a modification of the activated sludge process, to achieve economical secondary treatment, as well as, partial nitrification under favorable temperature conditions. Herein, correlations between design or operation variables and plant performance or effluent quality are reported, based on full scale plant data. Good agreement has been obtained with results of previous investigations. Moreover, a procedure is presented for more efficient and economic wastewater treatment plant operation.
