THERMOTROPIC POLYARYLATES FROM 4,4'-DIPHENYLDICARBOXYLIC ACID MODIFIED WITH 5-APPROXIMATELY-10 MOL-PERCENT 1,2-BIS(2-CHLOROPHENOXY)ETHANE-4,4'-DICARBOXYLIC ACID

Polyarylates obtained from methylhydroquinone and 4,4' -diphenyldicarboxylic acid (BB) modified with 5 to approx. 10 mol% 1,2-bis(2-chlorophenoxy) ethane-4,4' -dicarboxylic acid (Cl-PEC) showed liquid crystallinities and melting temp. 294 to approx. 352°C. As-spun fibers of the polyarylates (BB/C1-PEC=9/1, 9.5/0.5) showed high Young's moduli: 65, 91 GPa. Injection molded parts of the polyarylates (BB/C1-PEC=9/1, 9.5/0.5) showed similarly high flexural moduli: 39.6, 39.2 GPa (0.8 mm thickness). However, wide angle X-ray diffraction patterns of the injection molded part and SEM of the flexural fractured injection molded part (BB/C1-PEC=9.5/0.5) are different from those of the polyarylate (BB/Cl-PEC=9/1). Polyarylate (BB/Cl-PEC=9.5/0.5)showed lower anisotropy and fewer fibrils than the polyarylate (BB/Cl-PEC=9/1).
