The anterior approach to total hip arthroplasty can be made through a single, small incision in the front of the hip. This does not involve cutting any muscles, and the posterior dynamic stabilizers of the hip are preserved. Although it has a steep learning curve, this technique provides for a faster recovery with less pain and a more stable hip. This paper describes the background and surgical technique of the procedure.
