摘要
The chemical composition of polymetallic nodule samples from 180 locations in the Central Indian Ocean Basin based on 600 chemical analyses has been investigated. These nodules contain a Mn/Fe ratio varying from 0. 96 to 8. 76 and they broadly fall within the field of 'hydrogenous deposits. ' A finer classification reveals that there are three basically different types of nodules becoming enriched in metals by different depositional processes. Type B nodules having Mn/Fe ratio up to less than 2. 5 show hydrogenous enrichment, type A nodules having a ratio greater than 5 are early diagenetic type, and in between these two is the mixed type AB nodules, having Mn/Fe ratio between 2. 5 to 5 and formed by the influence of both processes.
