摘要
This article describes the components necessary for a successful triage program in today's busy emergency department (ED). An employee-based triage committee is discussed and their work delineated. The process for rapid versus comprehensive triage is outlined and examples are provided. Patient throughput can be improved using ideas discussed. Competency-based training is essential in the high-risk area of triage. Development of a Triage Manual tailored to the individual ED will assist in staff education. The collaboration of staff RNs and ED physicians in creating protocol-based processes for patients helps ensure rapid disposition of care. Staff-driven change in the ED creates an environment of positive attitudes and satisfied customers and can lead to an increased market share in your community.
